XP Pro File Share Access Problem.......

R. Platt

I've got a rather odd file access problem I'm having trouble with. I just
started taking care of this network so I'm not intimate with its details yet
but I'll tell you what I can.

This P2P network consists of three XP Pro machines. I'm pretty sure they're
current on patches. They all are running Trend Micro's PC-cillin Internet
Security version 2005. Everything was working great until one computer died
and I got them a replacement. The replacement will not talk to the "server"
or any other computer on the network. The IP address and subnet are fine
(DHCP) and so is the workgroup. Also, the new computer can get out to the
Internet just fine. None of the other computers show up in "My Network
Places" nor can you search for them by name or IP address. You can ping the
"server" after you turn off the firewall portion PC-cillin (turned off on
the server), which is to be expected, but that is the only sign of
communication. At this time the new computer only has Norton Antivirus
installed. Also, I plugged in a new XP Pro laptop to the network and it
communicates just fine with the desktop I'm having problems with.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to look at??

Thanks,

Randy

Randy,

I'd start by making sure that NetBT is Enabled on all 3 computers (you do have a
NAT router?).

Make double sure that you don't have a personal firewall issue. Disabling
firewalls doesn't always work.

There are various other possibilities too, and any might be the cause of your
problem. Read this article with an open mind.

Or look at "browstat status", "ipconfig /all", "net config server", and "net
config workstation", from each computer, and diagnose the problem. Read this
article, and linked articles, and follow instructions precisely (download
browstat!):
