XP Pro File Problems on W2K Server

We have a serious problem with files on a W2K server (sp4). I have several people with XP Pro stations that get file open errors when trying to open the same file after closing it. It's SEEMS to be when the user closes the file and tries to re-open it after a few minutes. They get a (to paraphrase) "File in use. Do you want to open read only?" And no one else has the file open

Any clues out there

I am having a similar situation with deleting Shortcuts created on a W2k Server using an XP Pro machine. The user can create/delete any file or directory and can create short cuts from the XP Pro computer but can not delete them. It claims the file is in use by another person or the disk may be full. User did not have the same problem from a W2k Pro machine
Any ideas?
