XP Pro compatibility problems with net cards and Yahoo DSL

I just built a new computer. It has a Pentium 4, 2.4GH
processor with 512MB ram chip. We installed a TDK CD/RW
drive, a Western Digital 80GBHD along with a grahiics
card and generic sound card all supported by XP Pro. We
loaded the XP Pro and easily got all the components and
system working flawlessly.

Next we installed what was supposed to be an XP Pro
compatible Net Card and booted the system up. Then we
plugged in the DSL cable to the Net Card. Immediately
the system went into a loop going from the intiial "black
boot up screen" then to the "start up XP screen" and then
back thru the loop.

We immediately shut the system down and uninstalled the
Net Card. When we booted the system back up neither the
mouse or the keyboard worked. After re-booting a time or
two the mouse and keyboard worked. However, the system
won't recognize the TDK CD/RW drive. It lights up and
spins, but, won't recognize files/programs on the CD
itself.

We have called TDK and they can't seem to offer any
solutions. So, far we have not been able to successfully
restore the system.

My next step is to try to use the XP "system restore"
function to see if we can get XP Pro back to where it was
before we plugged in the net card.

I would like to know if anyone knows anything about the
compatibility of XP Pro with net cards and yahoo DSL?

Also does anyone have any ideas/information that might
help us solve this problem.

Thanks,

Wally.

You don't tell us what make/model NIC you used. However, I haven't found
any NICs that gave XP a problem, and I've installed the SBC/Yahoo DSL
on quite a few systems. Depending on what happens with your System
Restore, it actually sounds as though the NIC might have physically
shorted out your system and was a piece of bad hardware as opposed to a
software/driver issue. Please post back and let us know what happened.
