XP Pro Backup Utility floppy disc needed?

I searched the web and this newsgroup and am surprised that no one else has
had a problem like my own.

I have XP Pro, and just bought an external HD to backup my whole system. I
used the XP back up utility but at the end it prompted me to insert a floppy
disk to create a restoration file of some sort. I don't have a floppy disc
drive, only a cd recordable, and it didn't give me an option to put it onto a
CD. It told me that the backup was not complete because this file could not
be created.

What is this disk and can the information be placed on a CD-R somehow?

Thanks,
Steve

It is info that the backup process needs to restore the backup file.
Sorry, it cannot be put on a CD-R because it would first need to be placed
on the floppy.
I solved this problem by buying a USB floppy drive.
Everybody who uses the native backup program to create a backup file for
their system disk has encountered this problem.

Unless your motherboard offers the option to boot from USB devices, then you
have not solved your problem. The floppy disc is used when the HDD is no
longer bootable...you boot from the floppy and it boots to a shell that
allows the transfer of the backup to the HDD. I suspect that your system
cannot boot from a USB floppy, not many can, and therefore if your boot
drive is rendered unbootable, your only choice is to wipe and install from
the OS CD.

FWIW, you could have used Norton Ghost, which would have yielded a true
sector by sector image of your HDD, and would have backed it up to bootable
DVD or CD. You will find that the native Windows backup utility leaves *a
lot* to be desired, which is why hardly anyone uses it.

Other options include Arconis True Image (not nearly as friendly or as
useful as Ghost).

Are you referring to the ASR backup file? I thought that with ASR you
start with the windows installation disk. Isn't it so?
