XP Pro and VPN

I am a web designer and earlier this summer had to set up
a VPN connection to work on a site at the locale
University.

Recently, however, when trying to surf the internet, the
VPC connection pops up and wants me to connect. If I
click on No, or just close the box, it make me work
offline. If I click OK, it connects to the VPN and wants
to go through the University system.

This was happening before I downloaded the SP2 for XP Pro
and is doing the same thing now with SP2.

Any ideas as to what is going on and what I can do to
stop it.
 
I would check the default connection setting in Internet Options (from
control panel or IE Tools menu).
