XP Pro and problems release/renew IP address

I have XP Pro using the Linksys WUSB11 usb network
adapter and the Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless router.

For the life of me, Windows will not release and/or renew
the IP address. Everything is setup for DHCP. What gives?
Reinstalled the driver for the network adapter, still no
luck. What causes windows to not release/renew the IP
address?

I even went as far as hooking up my old wired network -
same problem w/this one computer..grrrr

I have 2 other computers on my wireless network and they
work fine - i can release and renew all day if I want.
What gives?

Typed: ipconfig /renew - this is the error msg:

Windows IP Configuration

An error occured while renewing Interfact Wireless
Network Connection 3: An operation was attempted on
something that is not a socket.

Type "ipconfig /renew" at a command prompt and post back with the error.

In my experience, Windows will not release or renew unless
it detects a network connection.

I would play around with your wireless settings to see if
they are all talking on the same frequency or make sure
that your access point can handle the increased number of
connections.

EDIT: could this error be related to a corrupt Winsock.
If so, I think just reinstalling the Winsock stuff would
solve the problem.

How about this for a twist:

I found a utility that reset the host file, reconfig'ed
the TCP/IP and socks ...the works. Anyhow, I was able to
finally get an IP address - I can release and renew all
day now. HOWEVER (here's the twist) - once I reboot the
pc, it goes back to how it was before...no more
release/renew. So..any suggestions? Should I just say
the hell w/this and reinstall XP?

SCanned and found spyware and a virus and a backdoor.
Cleaned up all that junk and it's working now...rebooted
about 10x's...no more network problems. I guess I took
the hard route..I should have scanned in the 1st
place...oh well.

Have you done a search for spyware?
