XP Peformance

Task mgr is reporting 50% CPU utilization while computer is idle!! . Is this
normal? Never looked until lately. My computer is a P4 3.2 mhz with 2 gig
ram and two 10,000 rpm SATA hard drives. Opening up any file wil take CPU
utilization easily up to 80 to 100%. Computer is noticebly slower... not
sure if from BIOS upgrade (ASUS) or me messing with Performance settings.
Right now, I have everything set to Windows optimize my memory.

Your input on what to check is appreciated

What about other maintenance jobs, is your system clean of
spyware/adware/viruses? Have you done a cleanup lately? Analyze the
frag levels and see if it needs to be defragged. File access can crawl
to a slow if ur drive is badly fragmented.

Running Norton Anti-virus--- nothing on spyware. Not sure if its related,
but I found three Wan Miniport (IP, L2TP and PPOE) protocols attached to my
3com Network adapter. I disabled them but unable to uninstalled? Do you
think this is related??

Hi Art,

I have seen this before. The first thing I do is run the task mgr an
see what process is using up cpu. From there you may be able t
identify and kill the offending pgm.

Not sure of that, but what's running in Task Manager/Processes

Looks like my print spooler is misbehaving ... hogging 48% of system
rescoures. I closed it and recaptured resources.... unfortunately it raised
its ugly head again. Trying to track down cause.

May be something is hanging?

I have a program that send CPU to 100% occasionally at start OR in the
middle of a process within the program OR after closing the program.

The only way I ID'd the exe was as the application disappeared from
Application window in WTM its associated .exe was still present under
Processes listing

A smart prod on closing the process helped

The Task Manager shows the print spooler misbehaving..... using 48% to 51%
of system resources. This is re-occurring ..... but cannot find cause of
print spooler miscue. I have deleted and re-installed local and netorked
printers. Anyother suggestions are welcomed.

Have you checked for viruses? This can be caused by certain malware namely
Backdoor types.
here is a tip I gleaned from the internet, whther or not it'll help I don't
know:
spoolsv.exe hogging 99% of cpu - the fix
I came into lab to find the printer printing strange ASCII characters, one
line per page, and a basically inoperably slow PC. Checking Task Manager, I
found the culprit - one spoolsv.exe at 99% cpu which I killed. About 30
seconds later, the cpu was once again clogged by a revived app. Here's the
fix. First, get some breathing room - go to Control Panel, Administrative
Tools, Services and stop the Print Spooler. Turn off the printer. Now go to
C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS and delete the files there. I found
'00020.SHD' and '00020.SPL'. Now turn your printer back on and restart the
service. Check task manager, spoolsv.exe should be at 00%
