XP Password bug

Sometimes when I try to log in after being on standby for awhile, XP asks me
for my password. The problem is I don't have a password. I did plenty of
spyware cleanups, checked for viruses, and cleaned my registry. Still no
dice. If this is a bug is there any chance for anyone at Microsoft fixing it
asap? If not, any way I can prevent this in the future?

You're not going to get any bugs fixed asap, and you're not talking to MS
here. All the folks in this newsgroup are volunteers.

Have you checked Power Options in Control Panel and unticked the option to
ask for a password when resuming from standby? Also check the settings in
Display Properties for the screen saver.

A work around would be to assign a password to the account, which is, by the
way, a good basic security practice, and then set the system to auto logon
so you don't have to click on anything to get to the desktop. Here is how
to set up auto logon.

1. Go to Start | Run and type in: control userpasswords2 | Ok.

2. On the Users tab, clear the Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To
Use This Computer check box and then click OK.

3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the user name
and password for the account you want to be logged on each time you start
your computer.

You can accomplish the same thing by:

Download and install tweakui for xp and use its auto logon feature.

Lastly you can add the Dialog box that comes up when running control
userpasswords 2 to the Control Panel with the following tweak:

Add Control User Passwords2 to the Control Panel (Line 1)

Update: Didn't work. Also this bug over-rides any password already used. This
has happened before, while using an older HDD.
