Windows XP is new to me, so I ask for your patience. I now have all of
the basics of my new system up and running. Previously on my old
Windows 98SE system, I had installed a number of other programs. I was
wondering if these programs are also useful on my new XP system, or
whether they already exist as a part of the XP operating system. Here
are the programs, which I am wondering about:

Kerio Personal Firewall
AdAware
SpyBot
WinZip
IfranView
AdobeReader 6.0
SpywareBlaster 3.5.1

Also, does anybody know whether Microsoft Office 97 is compatible with
XP?

I would be interested in learning about other useful/helpful software
programs, that I should consider installing on my new XP system?

I do plan to purchase a Windows XP tutorial book the next time I am in a
bookstore. For now, I am finding my way around using the help support
that came with Windows XP. Thus, I hope you will understand my limited
knowledge about this new operating system and, thus, my questions.

Thanks for any suggestions or recommendations sent my way.

All of the programs you list will work with Windows XP. That includes
Office 97.

Additional notes:
Windows XP has a firewall built in. It is best to use one or the other
but not both. So, if you install Kerio, turn the Windows firewall off.

Microsoft has Windows Defender, a beta anti-spyware program you might
want to try in addition to or instead of AdAware, SpyBot and
SpywareBlaster. You can use all four. If you want to try it, download it
from microsoft.com. It is not included on the CD.

Windows XP will handle zipped files. However, you might want to keep
WinZip.

Adobe Acrobat Reader is up to version 7 but 6 works well and some prefer
it.

Hope this helped.

Yes, Office 97 works with XP. You are smart to get a Windows XP book. Go
over one of those and you will be sailing. I don't know if WinZip is all
that useful in XP as it has compressed folders which zips things up for you.
You might take a look at Windows Defender which can be downloaded from
Microsoft and not bother with AdAware, Spybot and Spyware Blaster. Too many
of those running slows the system. Adobe is at version 7.5 now and you can
get it off the Adobe website.

In brief:

Kerio Personal Firewall: don't know
AdAware: yes
Spybot Search & Destroy yes
WinZip: yes (it's better than the
built-in XP Zip file support)
Irfan View: yes
Adobe Reader: yes (current version is 7.07)
SpywareBalster: don't know

AdAware and Spybot may be redundant, but there's no need to install them in
an active mode, so you won't lose much system resources.

I have read that Office 97 runs well under XP, but I haven't used anything
older than Office 2000 myself.
(The student/teacher version of Office 2003 is relatively inexpensive. Its
main drawback is that it can't serve to qualify to a newer version, but its
price is low enough so that matters little.)

I have Norton Systemworks 2005 installed. It's widely unpopular, but it has
worked for me.

Address scarmbled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

Since when is redundancy bad? They really approach the same problem
differently. I would never consider running only one spyware program.
Windows Defender is good too.
