XP only sees my 320GB 2nd HD as 128GB - help

Hi All

I have a Dell Optiplex PC running Windows XP Professional 2002. This came
with a 40GB HD so went and bought a Maxtor 320GB HD so that we can use it as
a 2nd drive for storing video files.

Put the new drive into the PC as a slave, went into bios put it onto auto
and the bios recognised it as 320GB, but when I go into Windows it only
registers it as 128GB in the Disk Management window.

Is there a fix for this?

Do I have to format it as an NTFS primary partition before the rest will
appear?

Any advice you can give would be very much appreciated.

Thanks

Many thanks for prompt reply, but is Windows XP Professional 2002 the same
as SP1 or a prior version?

If I install the hotfix that you suggested will this do rather than updating
to a possible SP1 or SP2?

I have an SP2 update CD, is there really any problem in updating?

Thanks

You don't have SP 1 or SP 2 installed and you should have done this a
loooooong time ago. Since you have the SP 2 update CD, follow the
instructions here:

http://aumha.org/win5/a/sp2faq.php#

and http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?pr=windowsxpsp2

Once you get SP2 installed (and all the latest security updates of which
there are roughly 75, go to disk management, delete the partition you
created and recreate the partition (320 GB) and format with NTFS (FAT 32
format can't be done on a drive of this size by using Windows XP.)
