XP now so slow I can't use it...

A couple of days ago my XP (on a Dell Dimension 4300) slowed up. I
didn't have any new hardware/software installed, and I| run all the
usual Anti Virus bits & bobs.
Anyway booting in diagnostic mode, boot seems to stop loading driver
AGP440.SYS. I checked up a few postings on this. I tried to user the XP
Repair utility, but couldn't remember the admin passsword. I decided to
reinstall from my CD to a new location; I left this running overnight;
it just finished after over 18 hours !!!
I still have a slow system, painfully slow, I really amnot able to do
anything. Any ideas? It takes 15 minutes now to boot and I just get the
welcome screen. I did run a chkdsk and it looked OK.
TIA,Ned

From your description of the symptoms, it sounds like you have hardware
failure. Either your hard drive is going or the motherboard drive
controller is. Test the hard drive - not with Chkdsk - but with a
diagnostic utility downloaded from the drive mftr.'s website. You will
create a bootable cd/floppy with this file. Boot with the media you
created and do a thorough test. If the drive fails any physical tests,
replace it.

If the drive tests good, then 1) swap out the drive cable for a
known-working one; 2) if that doesn't make any difference, try the
drive on a different controller; 3) if that doesn't work, pull it and
try a different known-working hard drive on the various drive
connectors. If that doesn't work, it's probably a bad motherboard.
