XP not communicating with router

Jeff

Win XP Pro SP2. I have 2 machines which until today have happily accessed
the internet via a Netgear adsl router. Now my main PC is not able to
access the internet at all. Neither is it able to access the files on the
other computer via the router. The other computer continues to access the
internet perfectly well via the router. I've tried swopping ports and it
makes no difference. The laptop can access via any port on the router, and
the desktop can access via none.

When I ping the ip address, I get this message four times:
PING: transmit failed, error code 5

My isp tells me that my router is connected (which of course I know because
of my other machine being connected) and that it seems my PC isn't seeing
the router. I've tried rebuilding the ip stack using the cmd netsh int ip
reset c:\resetlog.txt The log tells me all the things which were reset, but
it hasn't solved the problem.

Can anyone suggest what might be wrong, and more importantly what might put
it right?! Just please don't suggest System Restore....
Thanks
Jeff

PING: transmit failed, error code

Symptom: When you attempt to ping a Web site name or TCP/IP address using the Ping utility, you receive either of the following error message:

- Bad IP address <Web address>

- PING: transmit failed, error code xxxxxx

Cause: This behavior can occur if you attempt to uninstall software such as the Winsock and firewall but it is not uninstalled completely.

Resolutions: 1. make sure you install a firewall software correctly.

2.. Remove and re-install NIC.
3.. Repair and re-install winsock32

Hey thanks Bob - but I can't find any information about HOW to do what you suggest in steps 2 & 3. Can you point me in the right direction please?
Thanks
