I as recently as last night tried to put together a
makeshift network, I wanted to play a game over the
internet with a computer downstairs, and upon realizing
that we both have the same IP address, couldn't come up
with another solution than just trying to network them
together.

Well, whatever happened, it didn't work. However, my
question has more to do with what happened afterward. I
tried to get everthing back to normal, just putting both
computers through the router to get to the internet for
both, which worked before. Now, however, only one
computer will actually connect to the internet, the other
doesnt. The other doesn't seem to even be able to
contact the router since I can't load the setup page on
the router from that machine.

I've gone through a few troubleshooters and what not, I
can actually successfully ping my router, and ping
4.2.2.2, whatever that is, but I can't ping websites like
yahoo.com. I still can't load webpages or do anything
web based from that machine. I've manually specified the
machine's IP address to link through the router(which was
the only way I got the pings) but still no dice.

Is there something I might have accidently switched on
while trying to set up that network that I need to tell
the computer to switch off or something, to let it know
it needs to access the internet through the LAN instead
of another computer or something?

I use winXP, linksys 4 port ethernet router and a CNET
pro200wl adapter on the nonworking machine. It's a dell,
about a year old.

Thanks,
John

Set up both computers to use DHCP from your Linksys router, presuming DHCP
is enabled therein.

That's a DNS server.

Undo that and start over with DHCP from the router.

Was using DHCP before, I switched back just for a cross
your fingers approach but no avail, still have one
computer on and one computer off. Can't even ping the
router now.

Moreover, I'm pretty sure now it's a windows issue since
I just switched out network cards to have all my problems
follow me to a new card and new drivers. I did something
that made windows not want to connect to the internet.

So, DHCP doesn't work to get it online, again I have all
the lights blinking, the cable works on another machine
so it's not bad, and the card wasn't the problem. Is
there anything I might have done while trying to set up a
network that I'd have to undo to get back to normal
internet?
