XP. My Computer area.left click icons will not open

When i get into My Computer area from desktop, and left
click with the mouse it should open the item. eg left
click my documents or icons within. Also the c drive icon
it should open, but instead it brings up the search box.
So i have to right click and a menu appears. With this
menu the first item is search and next item open, when i
think it should be the other way around. How can i change
the order so that open is first and have the item open
with the left mouse click instead of the search box
appearing. rgds Alan
