Running windows XP professional with 256 megs of ram. The system idels at
250 megs. I have MCafee 8.0.0I and office 2003. With all windows closed it
goes down to about 230 megs. When I reboot 230 megs. When I look at my
processes they do not total up to 256 or 230? Any ideas?

Describe your hardware - some build-in hardware may use system memory.
What amount of RAM is reported by BIOS?

Yes. The PC is working normally. Add more RAM if you would like and the
system will allow it.

No, they did change to code. They have added 'services" to automatically
start whenever the PC is booted. The more applications that you have
auto-start, more of the memory would be used.

What has microsoft done. It never use to do this. Did they change some code?

Ever since Windows 95, Windows has always grabbed all the memory it
could when it started. It then parcels out that memory to
applications as it is needed. It is absolutely normal to see all of
your memory being used.

What application are you using to check this?
