XP Media Center upgrade path

Guest

My HP notebook came with XP Media Center, which I thought was ok... I want to
run Business Contact Manager and Small Business Accounting but they are not
supported with Media Center. I have a XP Pro upgrade disk. Would that cause
more problems doing the upgrade? I have the full version of Vista on the way,
I'm considering formating and loading Vista, but I'm afraid I'll miss
something that I'll need.
Upgrading to XP Pro would be fine if the upgrade isn't buggy...
Any thoughts?

There is no upgrade path from Windows XP Media Center Edition to
Windows XP Professional. You would need to perform a "clean install"
of Windows XP Professional which requires reformatting your hard drive.

Going from XP Media Center Edition to XP Pro is considered a "downgrade".
The only way you could use the Pro disk is by a clean install.

Seems to me, "Media Center" is appropriately named. Why was the Media
Center accepted?

MS really screwed up here- MC is horribly fashioned for someone trying to
get
real work done.

One should get the version of the OS that fits their work requirements. MCE
is geared towards..well...media use.

Considering the XPP features disabled on MC, it's laughable
to consider MC anything but downgraded XPP.
Both are installed on the same NTFS core registry; why hasn't MS come out
with a "here's a list of registry settings to reset to the base XPP" and a
tool to do so?

Why? If you want XP Pro, install XP Pro.
I had to buy a replacement notebook for my work unit and the version was
supposed to be xpp but came with mc. I had to do a clean install of my
xpp
-so MS tools suggest. Obviously not- the 'clean' install leaves many MC
registry values laying around.

Then you didn't do a clean install, or didn't do it correctly. Nothing is
retained from the old installation in a clean install if it's done right.
now the system functions as xpp until the ms
validation or update tools run, then they think they're working with mc.

That sentence makes no sense. The validation is done on the basis of the
product key entered.
Rather than making duped customers endure the grief of a full reformat of
their systems, why doesn't the giant in REDMOND FESS UP, ADMIT THE MISTAKE
AND PROVIDE A tool to do this properly? MC is garbage.

Seems like your problem was that computer was ordered with the wrong OS.
Blame the person doing the ordering. Subsequent problems were due to
operator error in not doing the clean install properly. There is nothing
wrong, per se, with the media center edition.
