Steve,
The firewall was already disconnected. Any other ideas, please? Thank-you
Dou
In adding an XP machine to a stable network of three,
I ran the XP nework wizard and then rebooted all and waited a half hour
All are using TCP protocol and all have file sharing on
But I can't see my new XP machine in network places
I then manually gave the XP machine a IP address with same submask as others
The XP box can ping the other three win98 machines and the router, and those three
and the routher can ping each other, but none can ping the XP machine
Please help - I've poured through many a website trying to solve this

I am guessing that the XP is the Pro version. There is an anoying little setting that can casue this type of behaviour, it can be found in the folder options. RIGHT CLICK MYCOMPUTER> EXPLORE, from the menu bar choose TOOLS> FOLDER OPTIONS> VIEW, at the bottom of the list uncheck the box for "simple file sharing". I have found that this feature can cause the type of problem you are having with connection issues. I hope this helps and let me know if it solves the problem.

Doug;
Just a thought, do you use ZoneAlarm? If so you must disable it on all
machines.

Yes! That may be it. The firewall built into XP was disabled, but I am using ZoneAlarm

Hello;
You have firewall protection in your router. How much? God
knows! It seems to be OK for me, so far. There is a way to
continue to use ZoneAlarm through some form of
configuration. I do not know how to do it. I am just a
beginner with networking. My network would not work until
I disabled ZoneAlarm. I still have AVG 6.0, Adaware and
SpyBot to protect against viruses, trojans and other nasty
stuff. As far as I could determine ZoneAlarm keeps hackers
away. I need my network running so I will just take my
chances until we can get more help from the MS MVP or
other experts. Good luck to you.

Yes indeed. I discovered that last night - that the router has a firewall
Changing the configuration in Zone Alarm did the trick. (I put the local machines
in the trusted zones and allow them full acces with ZoneAlarm.

I don't know if this redundancy is necessary... but I seem to be all se
and have not seen in "hacker attempts" since I've moved the modem upstrea
of the router (internet->modem->router->4 pc's); whereas ZoneAlarm wa
giving me hacker messages when I had a direct connect from model to a single P
(internet->modem-->PC<->router->other 3 PC's).

I'd like to know the pro's and con's of the various configurations and whether
hardware or software firewall is preferred... I'll open a new thread for that..

Thanks all for your help
