recently my XP home edition will startup fine but I will
have no startup or icons and therefore nowhere to go. I
can ALt-control-delete and use the task manager to run
tasks so I have tried to load original drivers from my
Diagnostics CD that came with the computer (I don't have
an XP cd just a recovery CD) and I CAN get to startup..but
only until I reboot and then the startup is gone again. I
also can't boot in safe mode (hitting F8 during windows
startup) I have tried the windows update that the
microsofts website recommends and if it updates any
drivers I will get a startup until I reboot and then it's
gone again. I'd sure appreciate some help or at least
somewhere to go.
thanks

Hi Terry,

Suggestions:

Control/Alt/Delete - When the Windows Task Manager dialog box appears, go
to Processes, find Explorer.exe highlight it and choose End Process.

Keep the task manager open then select the File menu and then New Task
(Run). When the Create New Task dialog box appears, type in Explorer and
press the OK button. Windows Explorer should restart complete with the
Taskbar and Start button.

If still nothing: Go back to the Task Manager/File/New Task and type in
msconfig. On the General Tab choose Expand File.

Or go to Start/Run and type in CMD:
expand x:\i386\explorer.ex_ c:\windows\explorer.exe

Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar (Line 195)
