Hi---I need some techie advice with my comp---
I turn the pc on and windows starts to load, the welcome
screen comes up and then i get my desktop screen but it is
blank, the hard drive stops responding for about 10 - 15
seconds then the hard drive starts running again and my
desktop dissapears and the pc goes to the user login
screen, i click on my name and the screen says loading
settings then straight away says saving settings and it
keeps doing this in a loop everytime i try to login.
I have started my computer in safe mode and also tried to
login as administrator but the same thing over and over
again.PLEASE HELP

Greetings;
I am a technician working on a customer machine with the identical problem. One of the feww times it did something different was once, when logging in as administrator in Safe Mode, I was instructed that the product needed to be activated before I could log on. I know beyond doubt that the product WAS activated (with a legal version of XP home). I am beginning to think there may be a new infection spreading, but haven't found it yet in any of the antivirus sites. I started the machine from a win98 boot floppy, ran fdisk to look at the partitions and found there was a 9 mb extended DOS partition where one never existed before. (We built the machine and installed and activated windows for this customer.)
We removed his HDD, slaved it to a removable bay on our bench machine, and ran several different virus scans on it. nothing significant was found (a couple of spyware objects - easily removed.)
We are at wits end on this one at the moment.
I agree with previous poster - HELP!!

Have you guys figured out on how to correct this problem ( short of a total reinstall?). Thanks in advance.

Common issue as of late.

A User Logon Request Is Rejected Without Any Messages
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=313322

If the above is not the case, this does work and has been verified:

This problem turns out to be that the Winlogon userinit entry is being set
to
"wsupdater.exe," and not "userinit.exe,".

From here, you can either opt to slave the drive and then use:

Editing the Registry for "other" Users
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/tips/xp_adv_reg_editing.htm

Then:

Go to Start/Run/Regedit and navigate to this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.

In the right pane under Userinit, Change the key to read:
C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe,

Or download and run the reg file on line 263 (right hand side)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Or:

Place your XP CD in and navigate to the Recovery Console.
Change the C:\Windows prompt to: C:\Windows\System32 and copy userinit.exe
to wsaupdater.exe

Reboot into Safe Mode and modify:

change userinit in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon from wsaupdater.exe, to userinit.exe,

Added info:

Recovering XP using the Recover Console (Line 333) Right hand side:
