I have four PC's running on W 2000 Pro connected through a SMC router.
All was fine until I put Win XP Pro on one of these PC's. Since then no
connection between any of them. They are all in the same workgroup. They
are all using TCP/IP protocol. They all connect to the Internet happily.
But they cannot find each other....

Win XP networking wizard does not work for W 2000 and I cannot find any
relevant documentation. Upgrading all PC's to XP is not an option.

Thanks for hints.

Here is some more info:

When I start up the XP and then the W2000 PC's none of the PC's can find
each other.

When I start up the W2000 PC's, wait till the network is established and
then switch on the XP machine, all computers are happily listed in the
"computers near me" window.

I'll check out the link. Thanks.

Mel,

Is this perhaps Windows XP SP2? If so, is Windows Firewall enabled? If so,
make sure you enable the File and Printer Sharing exception.

Do you maybe have a browser conflict (I'm not talking about Internet Explorer)?

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers you have in your
domain / workgroup, at any time.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305

You can download Browstat from either:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window, by "browstat status". Make sure all computers identify the same master
browser.

For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188001
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305
<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winntas/deploy/prodspecs/ntbrowse.mspx>

If no help yet, provide ipconfig information for each computer, and we'll
diagnose your problem.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "ipconfig /all >c:\ipconfig.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\ipconfig.txt in Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is
NOT checked!, copy and paste entire contents into your next post. Identify
operating system (by name, version, and SP level) with each ipconfig listing.

Mek,

How about the Node Type for W2000 #1? The complete IPConfig would be useful
here.

And for W2000 #2?

Help us to help you, please. There are numerous possible clues in the IPConfig.

A new day, a new attempt to live. Here is all I managed to get:

<SNIP Good Set Of Diagnostic Data>

Mel,

OK, that's a good start.

Node Types Broadcast (Win2K) and Unknown (WinXP). No prob there.

All comps on 192.168.2.0/24 subnet, no prob there.

Maybe a browser conflict (I'm not discussing Internet Explorer here, this is the
program that lets all the computers see each other).

The Microsoft Browstat program will show us what browsers you have in your
domain / workgroup, at any time.
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305

You can download Browstat from either:
<http://www.dynawell.com/reskit/microsoft/win2000/browstat.zip>
<http://rescomp.stanford.edu/staff/manual/rcc/tools/browstat.zip>

Browstat is very small (40K), and needs no install. Just unzip the downloaded
file, copy browstat.exe to any folder in the Path, and run it from a command
window, by "browstat status". Make sure all computers give the same result.

For more information about the browser subsystem (very intricate), see:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188001
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=188305
<http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/winntas/deploy/prodspecs/ntbrowse.mspx>

If browstats all look OK, do some detail diagnostic work. Take the following
code (everything inside the "#####"). (Did I get the names and ip addresses
right)?

Highlight then Copy the code (Ctrl-C), precisely as it is keyed, and Paste
(Ctrl-V) into Notepad. Ensure that Format - Word Wrap is not checked.
Save the Notepad file as "cdiag.cmd", as type "All Files", into the root folder
"C:\".
Run it by Start - Run - "c:\cdiag".
Wait patiently.
When Notepad opens up displaying c:\cdiag.txt, first check Format and ensure
that Word Wrap is NOT checked! Then, copy the entire contents (Ctrl-A Ctrl-C)
and paste (Ctrl-V) into your next post.

Do this from all computers, please, with all computers powered up and online.

So, the XP machine cannot find the names of the W2000 machines, but it can
find the op addresses of these machines. The W2000 machines cannot find the
XP machine nor can they find its IP address. The W2000 machines can find each

run on 10 Mbps.

I hope this info makes sense to you.

Mel,

Well, the IPConfigs show no connectivity problems (all on the 192.168.2.0/24
subnet), and no name resolution problems from node type (unknown and broadcast
are compatible).

From looking at the browstat, I'm guessing that you may have complicated things
by loading excessive protocols. Start by checking the list of items under Local
Area Connection Properties, on each computer. You only need the following items
in the list:
Client for Microsoft Networks
File and Printer Sharing For Microsoft Networks
QoS Packet Scheduler (optional)
Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)

Remove any "IPX/SPX" and / or "NetBEUI" items if present.

Then, under TCP/IP Properties - Advanced - WINS, NetBIOS Setting, make sure that
"Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP" is selected on all computers.

Finally, if you're running personal firewalls on any computer, make sure that
it's setup to allow file sharing with the other computers in the subnet.

Thanks. I have uninstalled the NetBEUI and IPX protocols, set WINS to
"enable Net BIOS" and restarted the lot.

The XP machine displays the shared folders of the W2000 machines but reports
" \\Winbis\C is not accessible. The networkpath was not found" . Computers
near me gives "@home is not accessible. The list of servers for this
workgroup is not currently available".

The W2000 displays the XP machine in computers near me, but reports
"\\6gxl1u is not accessible. The network path was not found".

No change in cdiag outcome apparent.

I have run the test with the firewalls turned off. Does XP has built in
security settings that might prevent access?

Thanks,

Mel

Mel,

What firewalls did you turn off? Many third party firewalls are known for not
turning off successfully.

With your protocols cleaned up, what does browstat show? A browser conflict
could also produce this condition.

Please provide browstat information for each computer.
Start - Run - "cmd". Type "browstat status >c:\browstat.txt" into the command
window - Open c:\browstat.txt in Notepad, make sure that Format - Word Wrap is
NOT checked!, copy and paste into your next post.

The browser requires anonymous access, so look at registry key

The above articles refer to Windows 2000. Remember WinXP is NT V5.1, and Win2K
is NT V5.0.

Have you used the Registry Editor before? If not, it's a scary tool, but it's
pretty simple once you get used to it. Here are a couple articles that might
help:
<http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/...home/using/productdoc/en/tools_regeditors.asp>
<http://www.annoyances.org/exec/show/registry>

Just remember to backup the key (create a registry patch) for
[HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa] before making any changes, if
appropriate.

From the Annoyances article:
You can create a Registry patch by opening the Registry Editor, selecting a
branch, and choosing Export from the File menu. Then, specify a filename, and
press OK. You can then view the Registry patch file by opening it in Notepad
(right-click on it and select Edit). Again, just double-click on a Registry

registry.

I did not check the "margi" machine as it is now 3:20 in the morning and I

to do another check. (I live in an early 17th century building which has its
disadvantages).

The firewall I run is Sygate Personal Firewall .

If this is getting to an unsolvable problem, would it be solved by updating
the W2000 machines to XP ?

Bye for now, time to go to bed .

I noticed that the values are different for the XP and the W2000 machine,
but I am not comfortable fiddling with the reg values without knowing what I
am doing.

I did not check the "margi" machine as it is now 3:20 in the morning and I
anticipate my wife will not appreciate me barging into her rooms at this time
to do another check. (I live in an early 17th century building which has its
disadvantages).

The firewall I run is Sygate Personal Firewall .

If this is getting to an unsolvable problem, would it be solved by updating
the W2000 machines to XP ?

Bye for now, time to go to bed .

Mel

Mel,

This is not an unsolvable problem. But it does appear to be a complex problem -
one with multiple causes. You'll simply have to solve each problem, patiently
and persistently.

With a 4 computer LAN, you should have just 2 computers providing browser
services. The browser service is very chatty, so you don't want too many
browsers running.

Pick the two computers that stay online the most, and designate them the
browsers. Make sure the browser service is running on the browser computers.
Control Panel - Administrative Tools - Services. Verify that the Computer
Browser, and the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper, services both show with Status =
Started. Disable the browser on the other computers.

After checking / disabling / enabling as above, POWER OFF all computers, to
reset the browser settings on each. Then power the browser computers on, and
finally other computers on.

Is Sygate on all of the computers? Have all been configured to provide file
sharing?
