I've just re-installed WinXP Pro (SP2) from scratch, since my original
drive bit the dust. Now it's finding "New Hardware" each time I boot
the system. There IS no new hardware, and I'm unable to determine what
"new hardware" it THINKS it's found. Has anyone anty thoughts on how I
can stop t his frmm occurring?

Thanks.

After you've cancelled the hardware installation go to Control
Panel---System---Devices
You should see something with a yellow ! mark - that's the new device. It
could be a PCI card/sound/network etc, you just need the driver to install

First, if you haven't downloaded all the latest patches released after
SP2, go to windows update and install them.

If your computer is from a major OEM, go to their web site and download
all the latest drivers for you model.

If your computer from a minor OEM, or home-built, then go to the website
of the manufacturer of device in your computer, and download their
latest drivers.

Once you have downloaded install each driver one at a time.

If you don't know what all of your hardware components are, then you
really have no business installing a OS on your own, and you should
start educating yourself.

Sorry. Not at all that easy. Device Mgr. says "Other Devices/Unknown
Device"!

Thanks though. MUCH more reasonable response than the one from that
other idiot!

LOL! I know what hardware devices are installed on my computer so when
installing an OS and I get the "Other Devices/Unknown Device" listed in
Device Manager I know which drivers are missing.

Like I said, "If you don't know what all of your hardware components
are, then you really have no business installing a OS on your own, and
you should start educating yourself."

So if you don't know which device is actually hiding behind the "Other
Devices/Unknown Device," it is you that is the real "idiot."

Most of the time, simply re-installng the OS on to a new HD
is not enough. All of the supporting software for the system
itself, e.g., motherboard chipset, USB, sound card, etc., also
needs to be re-installed. And not all of them, especially with
the more proprietary hardware, will be found in the Windows XP
installation cdrom. And "Other Devices/Unknown Device" fall
into this particular category. Still have the original cdroms
that came with the motherboard, video card, sound card, etc.?

Hi John,

This generally has to do with Other and unknowns. Start with Add Hardware
via the Control Panel.
