I have an older Toshiba Satellite 1675cds laptop. I
upgraded the ram to 192 meg (max) and a 40 gig HD. I
purchased XP home edition upgrade. Windows 98 came with
the machine. XP won't recognize my 98 during installation
and the configuration disk that came with the machine is
compressed so it won't recognize that either. I even tried
installation from both windows and boot up. no luck

Erm ... you haven't actually asked a question ... are you ...

i) trying to install XP onto a reformatted hard drive, 'showing' XP the old
98 disk?
ii) trying to upgrade to XP whilst running your version of 98?

I'm sorry, let rephrase my statement. How do I get XP
upgrade to recognize windows 98 during installation if it
won't recognize it or the installation disk provided by
the machine's manufacturer?? The disk is compressed with a
self extrator and I currently have windows 98 on my
computer, I'm just trying to upgrade.

If you have the Win98 on the machine and run the install CD from that,
you can then normally take Install and either

Upgrade
or
Change to New INstall, then when it saks to confirm where, hit ESC,
delete the current partition and make a new RAW on to format at the next
stage.

But - there may be some proprietary Toshiba components getting in the
way - those you would have to enquire of Toshiba about
