XP install questions

I have a notebook computer that has a non-working cd drive. It is is dire
need of a 'clean' install of XP (pro or home - I have disks and unused
licenses for same)

I have internet access on the problem system:
1 - If I partition the HD and download the install disk files into that
partition - can I install from one partition into another?

Second option - Can I install via a home network? I can set up a wired
network between the damaged computer and one of my other computers.

I'll take any suggestions/advice.

Thank you much.

Know anyone with an external USB CD drive?

No I don't. But - your question prompted a little testing on my part. I
put the files from the windows XP Home disk on a thumb drive and have access
to them on the 'broken' computer.

When I run setup I get a dialog stating windows can't do an install because
the version on my computer is newer than that on the other drive.

Any help with that ?

I'm close now - there HAS to be a way! | )

Thank you

That would be caused by having a later service pack installed on the PC
than what you are using to try the install with. Perhaps slipstream
update the CD to a later SP version first.

Jack,

Theoretically, you *could* do it from a USB flash drive but since it
is considered a removable and not a fixed drive, it may cause you
issues later down the road. You can copy the setup CD files to a flash
drive and then use something like NLite to slipstream the SP3 files
into it. That would likely work. I've not done this but in theory it
should work.
