When trying to update a password this return status indicates that the value
provided as a current password is not correct".

Got on to Compaq live help; what a waste of time that was.

They said do a destructive recovery, halfway through it kept saying "cannot
copy file....etc"

The bloke at compaq to abandon it then gave me a link to contact another
part of compaq, saying he couldnt help me anymore.

The link lead nowhere!

The PC now comes up with: load needed DLLs for kernel when you switch it on

It is my stepsons PC and he cannot find the recovery disks

I have tried CHKDSK, BOOTCFG /REBUILD and nowt worked!

Any ideas please?

If it's under warranty, have Compaq repair it. If it's not and the machine
has a recovery partition on the hard drive; read the owner's manual for
instructions on how to reinstall the operating system. If that doesn't work,
it might be because the hard drive is failing. Go to the website of the hard
drive manufacturer and download their disk checking utilities and test the
drive. If it fails, replace the drive. If the hard drive is good but the
recovery partition is corrupt; call Compaq and purchase a set of recovery
disks for your model computer. If they no longer carry disks for it, you can
still buy XP at retail.

No matter what you wind up doing, your next step should be to attach teh
drive to another system and copy off any data you want to keep. If you
wind up reinstalling or taking it for service or warranty, no concern will
be shown for your data. If you want that, take a copy now.
