XP home won't boot

When starting my computer I get a black screen saying that windows will not start. Say it may be due to new software or hardware or because windows was shut down in the middle of start up.

There are several options to use for boot.."Start normally", "safe mode", etc. I've tried all and none work. The system just loops back to the same screen.

I did install a new DVD writer two days ago, but the computer has been booted several times since then with no problem. I also diconnected the new drive, but still have the same problem. What next???
