After looking and looking, I cannot seem to find the
answer to what I think is a pretty basic question. Can
someone help me?

Does XP Home Edition have fully operational Word & Excel
programs included or do I need to buy XP Professional to
get these programs. I do not want some bonehead version
of these programs (like the late, great Microsoft Works,
which could not be read by Excel).

Thank you, in advance, for your help.

Neighter of the WinXP versions have Word or Excel; these programs are part
of Microsoft Office, seperately to buy.

No version of windows includes Word and Excel - Pro does not either.
They are part of the separate product 'Microsoft Office' which you have
to buy separately. Some makers used to bundle it in with new machines,
but It seems that they now rarely do so. As Office 2003 is about to
come out, you will probably be able to find Office XP (Office 2002) or
even Office 2000 going cheaply.. Or at least less expensively
