XP Home vs XP Pro at Home

Ok for a home user just what is the advantage of XP Pro over XP Home? I
don't see it?? Or am I too ignorant about it to notice?

I will install a wireless network with broadband finally and wondered is
there something Pro would do better?

My first access was in DOS days with a 2400 baud Modem now 56K seems slow so
now I'll finally move up.

The difference only matters if you need the features such as the ability
to log on to a domain, making individual security for various files and
folders based on users, setting up groups of such users for security
purposes. Some such things can be done in Home but only if you boot to
Safe Mode as they require turning off Simple File Sharing which is hard
wired into Home. In Pro, you can do those things at system level.

Sounds like I don't need it since I only have 2 PC at home that I will
connect. I was wondering because I'm back in college and the school has the
academic upgrades to Pro for like 89.00 versus the store 179.00 sounds like
180 more beer money*_*. Beer is better than MS I understand it!

You miss out the ability to remotely connect to your machine as well as run
a web server. If you've already got home just stick with it until you find a
problem, although I didn't have much luck upgrading from home to pro.

The WinXP Home and WinXP Pro versions are _identical_ when it
comes to performance, stability, and device driver and software
application compatibility, but are intended to meet different
functionality, networking, security, and ease-of-use needs, in
different environments. The most significant differences are that
WinXP Pro allows up to 10 simultaneous inbound network connections
while WinXP Home only allows only 5, WinXP Pro is designed to join a
Microsoft domain while WinXP Home cannot, and only WinXP Pro supports
file encryption and IIS. (Oh, and WinXP Pro usually costs roughly $100
USD more than WinXP Home.)

If you are in college and you need to log on to the college server at any
time and they require logging on to a domain, you will need Pro as Home
can't handle that. You'll need to check with the system admin to see if
that is required.

When I looked at this question the academic version was selling at the
school book store for the same price as the 'Home' version was selling for
on the streets.

Probably nothing significant to your use. Most all the differences are
things needed in a corporate network situation; Home will work just
fine in a 'Workgroup' one, setting up your WiFi as a 'peer to peer' one.

If you see no need for any of these Pro only matters, and you probably
won't, save money and get Home
