I have a old NT 4 network that has been running fine for
years. It has a few legacy apps on it so it isnt going
anywhere anytime soon. Now I have a couple of new POWER
(I.E. Big Bosses) users that want to connect their NEW
laptops to the network. I cant seem where to find in the
NETWORK SETTINGS to specify the DOMAIN NAME of the NT
Server. Any ideas or suggestions......

Right click on "My Computer", select "Properties", then click on the
"Computer Name" tab.

It is now in the systems panel, under computer name. Right click on my
computer and select properties or go to control panel and select system.
Click the computer name tab. Click button that has Change on it. Add it
to domain.

If your "POWER (I.E. Big Bosses) users" are using Windows XP Home Edition
then they will not be able to logon to the NT 4.0 domain - Windows XP Home
Edition does not support Domain membership. They will need to be upgraded
to Windows XP Professional.

The NT DOMAIN is seeing the computer, but there is no
where to specify the NT DOMAIN Name.....

I did that & it only has a place for a WORKGROUP. No Place
for me to specify the NT DOMAIN name.........

I guess their using XP Home Edition then. You can't join a domain with it.
Need the Professional edition.

THAT SUCKS BIG TIME !!!!!

I didnt know that until now. What Idiotic reason did they use to
justify this ?????

I am wondering if I install the NOVELL Client for XP if it will allow
me to login to the DOMAIN that way. Dont have a NOVELL network, but it
should work ????? Any thoughts or Ideas ?????

GREED!!!

xp pro costs more and has more bells and whistles and forces companies who
need to authenticate to a domain server to pay more.
xp home is for people who don't need to connect to servers.

Soon there will be 10 different windows versions with all the antitrust
stuff going on, I'm sure all at different prices.

Hint, you can however access shared files on a NT server and printers on a
domain with XP home. Just make sure the username that they logon locally
is the same username and password on the domain. Then map drives, printers
etc... Only draw back is you won't get the features of logging into a
domain server, such as policies, scripts, authentication. Because I
routinely have to work on xp home machines brought in by employees and to
get patches off our server I just map a network drive. With a different
login it prompts you to login to the server with a username and password
that has permission to access the server. It allows me to logon to our
server as administrator, and get to my patches directory.

Yeah I am doing that. GEEZ, I may setup a NOVELL server to handle
security & such.

If anyone has used a NOVELL CLIENT on a XP HOME machine with a NT
DOMAIN system, please let me know how it worked out.............

A Home users using Windows XP Home Edition is unlikely to require the
ability to access a Domain.
Business users who would require Domain authentication are directed to use
Windows XP Professional.
This is all detailed on our web site and the distinction is drawn and
covered.

No, a Novell Netware client will not let you login and authenticate to a
Microsoft Windows Domain.
These are totally different technologies etc.

If they are running XP HOME on the computers, you won't find the domain
setting. You cannot connect home edition computers to a domain. It is
not included. You need the professional version for domain access.

You can set them up in a work group and access domain resources by
fitzing around with usernames and passwords but that is more complicated
than I can go into right now.
