XP Home start to log on then logs off

I have Win XP Home Edition. Since yesterday, when I try to log on from
the Welcome screen (any user or Admin) it starts to load my personal
settings, then immediately logs me back off without a message. I am
able to log on in Safe Mode with Networking in all profiles.

Searching this topic online, I found many solutions recommending fixes
involving viruses that affect userinit.exe (wsaupdater.exe, for
example) but I don't think that's the case here - the Registry
(Winlogon) looks fine, and I am able to log on in Safe Mode.

I have tried creating new user accounts, "changing how users log on"
and other instructions from various support websites.

I bought this refurbished machine last year with I386 Win files on the
hard disk, but no CD.

I should mention that I was trying to set up a wireless SMC router
network when the problems started, but I can't imagine what I could
have done to cause this issue...

Any help/suggestion would be appreciated.

You'll need to purchase a conventional "Full Version"
of Windows XP Home Edition and proceed with a
"Repair Install".

Hello Sinatra

This sounds like the same thing that has happened to me. I ran a repair
installation and it still hasn't fixed it.

Glad to know there is someone else.

I recentlt dealt with this for a friend.
Re-installing over the top (repair installation) cured it.
But, it does require a Win XP CD-Rom!

Many thanks, folks. I guess I'm stuck having to shell out for a "Full
Version" XP Home and perform the Repair (though I have seen in other
posts that it doesn't always work). I may just grab my data somehow and
just go with a new installation of XP Pro... The bright side is that
I'll have a fresh install on a machine that can probably use a
clean-up.

By the way, any way to create an XP CD from the I386 folder?

If I find a solution between now and a couple of hundred dollars, I'll
post it.

Thanks again,
S
