XP Home Service Pack 2 download launch problems

I have recently had to reinstall the original XP version that came with my
Gateway computer. I have tried twice to download XP SP2 to upgrade it. The
installation is successful but when I initialize the system, it won't launch.
I get the error screen that asks if I want to start Windows normally or using
last known good configuration, etc. The only way I am able to use the
computer is through "safe mode." I believe I am current on my updates except
for SP2. I then uninstall SP2 and the system goes back to working fine. Any
Ideas?

There are approximately 97 critical updates after SP2 that should be
installed after SP2 is installed.

Where can I find these 97 critical updates after I have downloaded SP2? The
only way I can navigate the computer after I download SP2 is through the safe
mode.
