I just inherited my sons computer with Windows XP. Had to reload all programs and operating system. Now I have 54 critical updates to download via dial up. SP1 takes 90 minutes alone. I attempted to download yesterday, but lost internet connection. I looked for it in my C: drive and found:
C:/WUTemp/com_MicrosoftXP_SP1_Express_559
Size: 1.93MB
Created Monday, January 27, 2003
Modified: Today, August 2, 2004
Accessed: Today, August 2, 2004
File Version: 1.16.1200
Does that mean it was downloaded, or is that the creation date of the patch?
Do I delete it? What does it mean when it says I have to log on as administrator?
Also, I keep getting a Microsoft Messenger window that appears and says:
To Windows user on 8/3/04 Buffer overrun in Messenger Service could allow code execution (828035). Go to www.patchwindows.org and get the patch from Microsoft Security Bulletin MS03-043. What is this? Sorry guys but I just had my Gateway crash with all of my business info for three seperate businesses, and I don't want to screw up this Dell. I keep hearing about all the problems people are having after downloading updates - do the benefits outway the potential problems? Thanks!!!!!!!!

I am assuming that you are having a dialup connection. Connect to the
internet late in the night and download only the windows xp service pack1a.
The file you located probably means that you can resume broken download. If
you intend using msn messenger use the one that is available for download in
www.windowsupdate.com Alternatively you can download it by visiting the
following website : http://messenger.msn.co.in/Download/Default.aspx
To avoid losing info due to O/s failure create partition on your hard drive
or better still add a new hard disk.
Yes, you are right about the problems caused after downloading updates,
chances of running into problems are less.

The messenger window is spam. Do not go there. They are trying to sell
MS patches you get for free. You are getting this message because you
did not have a firewall active. Activate the built in one or even
better use one of the free firewalls which work better. I use the Sygate
version which works just fine.

Sygate Personal Firewall

Zone Alarm
http://www.zonelabs.com/store/content/company/products/znalm/freeDownload.jsp?lid=staticcomp_za

Kerio Personal Firewall

The link in my previous post explains how to get the free CD directly from
Microsoft. The CD is especially helpful for 56 k dial up users as it
obviates the need for a lengthy connection to the Microsoft Windows Update
site to obtain Security Update.

Does that mean it was downloaded, or is that the creation date of the patch?

*probably* that the stub program that downloads the package got
downloaded, and maybe started, but then things fell apart. Doing this
over dial up is a fraught business. I would delete it and start over
with another approach. . While one way would be to order the security
pack CD that includes SP1, my advice right now would be to hold off and
order the SP2 CD which you should be able to order on the web site when
it is released, if it is not available more directly. This release is
now expected within days rather than weeks.

Meanwhile make *sure* you have the firewall enabled before connecting to
the net *at all* (in Network Connections - rclick the connection,
Properties - Advanced page and check the box)
Do I delete it? What does it mean when it says I have to log on as administrator?

It would mean an account having Administrator status. Make sure the one
you use has that status. If it does not, you can log on after booting
with F8 as BIOS Info goes black to Safe Mode and using the account named
Administrator. In that, Start - Run - the line
control userpasswords2
where you can select your Account, click Properties and in Groups select
Other and Administrators
Also, I keep getting a Microsoft Messenger window that appears and says:
To Windows user on 8/3/04 Buffer overrun in Messenger Service could allow code execution (828035).

See above regarding firewall. This patch is in fact one of the ones you
need for safety against scumware, Make sure though that you go to
Windows Update, from All Programs, to get them - do not go to some place
that a message like that may suggest: it is itself one of the nasties
and did not come from Microsoft
The firewall should protect you until you have patches in general
installed.
