Ok, i have a pretty decent rig with a P4 3.2 Extreme Edition chip. So which
OS should I use with it to get best performance? Is XP Pro alot faster than
Home?
If your system has only a single CPU chip then the only reason to go
to XP Pro would be if you have a current or anticipated future need
for one of the specific functions which are part of XP Pro but are not
included with XP Home. Other than these items the two versions are
identical and both are compiled from the same source code base.
If your motherboard had two CPU chips (e.g. dual Pentium 4s) then that
might be a reason to go for XP Pro, as it will utilize both CPUs
whereas Home will only use one of them. Other than this specific
situation there is zero difference in performance or stability between
the two versions.
Note: Dual CPUs means two separate processor chips. A single
Pentium 4 processor with Hyperthreading capability will show as 2 CPUs
in Windows Task Manager but this is in fact only a single CPU. Both
XP Home and XP Pro fully support the Pentium 4 Hyperthreading.
Good luck
