XP Home Installation or Upgrade Disk??

My Sony Vaio has major problems that I think are linked to the recovery
disks. (several files have buffer overflows when I explore the dvds. these
buffer overflows lead into other suspicious commands.)
I want to do a clean install of Windows XP Home (or Pro upgrade). The XP
Home disks did not come with the computer. Should I do a:
1. XP Home Update
2. XP Home Full Install
3. XP Pro Update
4. XP Pro Full Install

If I do this, will it rid my computer of ANY crap the Sony Vaio embedded?
Is it safe to load any applications from the dreaded Sony Recovery Disks?
Thanks for any help.

Remember the "upgrades" will ask for a prior copy of windows OS (98,95,ME,
or 2000),if no cd can be produced, the xp install quits. With a full retail
version
of home or pro no other cds are needed. Also, youre sony recovery cds wont
work as a prior OS cd,a installed xp version from a mfg will be ok though.
