xp home fails to load trackball

I'm running xp home on a Athlon 1800 notebook. I use a
logitech trackman wheel. About 1/3 times I have to restart
as the trackball won't work. The other times it's fine.
I've reininstalled driver twice. Any idea would be helpful.

Is the connection USB and is it in sound condition?

If it doesn't work, hot unplug and re-plug the device.
