XP Home edition doesn't have IIS 5.1 ?

Hi all,

I have just installed .NET framework SDK and was proceeding nicely with the
tutorials when I found that I couldn't run the compiled program without iis.
Which led me to discover that I can't install IIS via the Control Panel,
which then led me to realise that XP Home doesn't include it; which then led
me to realise that full .NET development can only take place in XP Pro.
Nothing mentioned in the SDK tutorial or MSDN about this...
So does anyone know if the only solution to this problem is to upgrade to XP
Pro (and then reapply SP2 etc etc? What a drag!

Secondly is there an upgrade path from Home to Pro? Or is it as I suspect a
question of buying XP Pro?

Thanks in advance for any replies,
Bill Tudor

In order to use IIS, you'll have to upgrade to XP Pro.
You'll need to purchase the conventional "Retail Upgrade
Version" of Windows XP Professional.

Unless SP2 is integrated into XP Pro, then one cannot
upgrade an existing XP Home w/SP2 installation using
a non-SP2 version of XP Pro. What you need to do is
create a SP2 "slipstreamed" version of XP Pro, then use
the new CD to upgrade over XP Home w/SP2.

You have two options:

1. Uninstall SP2 from XP Home, then upgrade to XP Pro.

or

2. Create a SP2 slipstreamed version of XP Pro (preferred)
and use the new XP Pro w/SP2 to upgrade.

Either one of the following utilities makes slipstreaming
(integrating) SP2 into Windows XP a breeze:

Jesus H. Christ--are you really this dumb? There are two
versions of XP. One of them is called "Home" and the other
is called "PROFESSIONAL." This means that there are
probably differences between the two versions that are
based on whether one is likely to be a home user or a
PROFESSIONAL user. You express surprise, and and I hope
chagrin, that "full .NET development can only take place
in XP Pro." What a shocker!! Who'd a thunk it?

If this is the case, why has xp home continually offered .net and .net
upgrades. I downl;oaded the latest which was presented as " critical". It
downloaded fine but complained about IIS not being there. Microsoft says
that .net will be necessary soon for both versions of xp. Whats up with
this? More to the point, I downloaded the origunal .net a few years ago as a
critical program and was told at that time that this will soon be necessary.
Are Home users getting jacked around here?

Because .Net framework is being used on more and more programs some of
which do run on XP Home.

Yes - IIS is one of the items very explicitly excluded from XP Home
