I recently heard from a computer repair tech that XP Home
is actually an update of ME rather than a limited version
of XP Professional. Is there any truth to that assertion?

No

It's derived from win NT
all 32 bit code.
WINme is the "last" version that started with win95

Hi, Rod.

No truth to it.

WinME was built on the MS-DOS/Win9x platform. It is an update of Win98.

WinXP - both the Home and Professional Editions - are built on the NT
platform.

This is NOT a secret! Microsoft has told everybody. Anybody who doesn't
know just hasn't been listening.

Please don't let your "computer repair tech" anywhere near MY computer!!!

Repair tech? Sounds like fool to me.

Not true at all and if anyone claiming to be a tech says this I would never
let them touch my computer as they haven't got a clue.

Hah, I guess you don't need my help in saying no! But I
must say that article that was sent was interesting.
Thanks for the first post!

Oh, yeah.... No they're not related. Fire your computer
tech.

None whatsoever. Never, ever take a computer to that particular
"technician" again. And the next time you see him, let him know that
McDonalds is hiring; he'll won't be in over his head working there.

None. The central files of Home and Pro are the self same files - in
certain distributions literally the same ones on a common CD. Pro has
extras, that is all. The only connection with ME is that some concepts
(the GUI appearance to some extent, and System Restore) were piloted in
ME - and very much redeveloped for XP

Which distributions?

From what I've read, every file in a Home vs. Pro comparision is different,
because they are signed etc. So even if they are the same basic files, due
to the time stamps and the 'home vs. pro' signing, they'll be different.

To put the Home/Pro. thing another way. Pro. & Home are the same basic
operating system (work on the same kernel) but Pro. has some additional
features.

MSDN ones - that use a common section of the CD for both systems. The
signatures on identical files are the same. I think you are mixing up
with the different series of Product keys - that is solely of concern
for the Setup programs for the two systems (one file that *is* different
because it has additional things to install in Pro)
