XP Home Cannot See Windows Network

Hello, the usual, can't see shares on other computers. Can't even see other
computers. Can't even see THIS computer! Three computer network with
LinkSys WRT54G router, all wireless. All computers running XP Home. This is
only happening on my new desktop, the other computers see each other and
share real nice. Yes, NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled. Yes, Guest Account is
enabled. Yes, Browser is running. Yes, everyone can ping everyone else. One
strangeness though: IPCONFIG /ALL shows NetBIOS over TCP/IP: DISABLED. How
can this be? And how can it be corrected?

Before I was able to fully run the checklist, a Microsoft technician got back
to me via email. His solution was to load both the NetBEUI protocol AND the
IPX/SPX/NetBIOS protocol. Well, he got it so's I can see the Windows
network....but now I can't see the Internet. So I'll run the checklist
again...

Jim,

well, that advice is perhaps a quick fix, but even so the
question remains why both NetBEUI and IPX were recommended.

Installing a second transport protocol is like building a new,
second road because there's a heap of dirt on the first one.
Building a third doesn't make all that much sense to me.

Well, the whole thing doesn't make sense to me...but then, it IS a computer...

The kicker is I uninstalled the IPX (which I thought was a purely Netware
thing) and I still see the internal network. (But not the Internet!)

One clue is that the Internet Connection icon has disappeared from Network
Connections. Could this be a Services issue? He had me disable a bunch of
services while we were troubleshooting. I'm pretty sure I re-enabled them
afterwards, but...?

Jim,

somewhere in http://www.michna.com/kb/wxnet.htm , I think in the
very last chapter, is a pointer to the default service settings.
