Hi there,
How should I backup my XP home machine in order to restore the
operating system and applications if it crashes? Especially if I have
an OEM preinstalled version and no media.
Thanks a lot, T

My advice: get yourself a good external USB or firewire hard drive and a
copy of Acronis TrueImage Home 11....it's imaging software that will back up
not only your data, but all your applications and your operating system.
It's a pleasure to use. You can order Acronis online & download it -
www.acronis.com. I'm a huge fan of this for home/standalone machines....

If you have no OS reinstallation media or a branded "recovery disk" that
will return your computer to it's factory default build, the manufacturer
may have given you a hidden recovery partition on your hard drive. That
won't help you if your hard drive explodes, however...you might check with
them as to how you can create/burn a CD if that's possible. Or perhaps
they'll let you order one for a pittance. You really need to have one!

Use an imaging product such as Acronis TrueImage.

But, a properly created disk image would negate that need; it creates it for
you basically. The only real limitation is that the drive it's installed to
has to be as big as, or bigger, than the one the image was made for.
Make the image, copy it to DVD's, and go about your business. Then
define and use a decent backup strategy for the future. You won't be sorry
and you'll never spend double-digit hours getting your machine to work
again.

I still want my installation media, in addition to my own image backups.
That's just my preference.
