I have a Dell PC Pentuim 4 and it came with XP Home version, I upgraded to XP
professional and now when I boot the computer I get a startup window asking
which version to load. Can I and How do I remove the XP Home version and
automatically startup with XP professional?

I've been using the Home version and when I upgraded I've noticed my
computer performance has slowed down. Does someone have any info about my
situation?

Apparently, you failed to select the default "Upgrade" setup option
and managed to install Windows XP Professional in the same partition
as your existing Windows XP Home Edition. This is less than ideal
since one should not install two operating systems in the same partition.

I suggest stating over and installing Windows XP Professional correctly:
Perform a backup of your important files before proceeding.

The Windows XP CD is bootable and contains all the tools necessary
to partition and format your drive. Follow this procedure and allow
Windows XP to partition and format your drive:

NOTE: It would be best to physically disconnect all your peripheral hardware
devices, except the monitor, mouse and keyboard, before installing XP.

NOTE: If you have an internal Zip Drive installed, physically disconnect the
EIDE and power cable to it before proceeding, otherwise your main
hard drive may not be assigned the customary C: drive letter.
After installing Windows XP, you may then reconnect it.

1. Open your BIOS and set your "CD Drive as the first bootable device".

2. Insert your Windows XP CD in the CD Drive and reboot your computer.
3. You'll see a message to boot to the CD....follow the instructions.
4. The setup menu will appear and you should elect to delete all the existing
Windows partitions, then create a new partition, then format the primary
partition (preferably NTFS) and proceed to install Windows XP.

5. Clean Install Windows XP

6. ==> Immediately after installing Windows XP, turn on XP's Firewall.

7. After Windows XP is installed, visit the Windows Update website
and download the available "Critical Updates".

8. After installing the critical updates, be sure and visit the support website
of the manufacturer of the computer to download and install any
available Windows XP compatible drivers, such as video adapter
and audio drivers.

Carey;
I was getting ready to follow your steps, I failed to say I have an Upgrade
package of XP Professional.

Once I reformat my drive will I have to reinstall Dell's OS on to the drive
and then install XP Pro---making sure I choose "upgrade"?

I'm not Carey, but you don't need to install Home and then Pro. You'll
just need to provide the qualifying media; i.e., your Home CD. Here are
links about installing XP to help you:

There is no need to install XP Home before installing XP Pro.
Follow these steps:

1. Open your BIOS and set your CD Drive as the first bootable
drive and the Hard Drive as the second bootable drive.
2. Insert the XP Pro CD in the CD Drive, restart your computer,
and you'll see a prompt to hit any key to boot from the CD.
3. Once the setup files copy, elect to delete all existing partitions,
create a new partition, then format the new partition NTFS.
You will be prompted to insert your Dell CD in order to use
the XP Pro Upgrade CD.
4. When the computer automatically restarts, ignore the prompt
to hit any key to boot from the CD....it will do it automatically.
