My computer is set to power down after a specified amount
of time but I don't know if it's in standby, or if it's in
hibernation. How can I determine which one I'm set up for?
What's the concensus of opinion on hibernation? I don't do
scheduled events, so I'm really wondering if I need it. I
would still want to go into standby, I just don't need the
image for which hibernation requires 522MB of memory.

Any pros and cons on this?

Windows XP Home
512MB RAM
2GHz Intel Celeron
40GB Hard Drive

Start>Control Panel> Power Options
You can see right there what you are set for.
I have mine set for standby after 1 hr and hibernate
after 2 hours. It is up to you what you want the computer
to do. Standby puts the computer in a mode that uses less
power, hibernate will shut it off, but will resume where
you left off when you turn it back on.

also I would not turn off hard disks and you can turn off
monitor after 30 min or so. (actually doesn't turn it
off, just puts it in low pwoer mode).
