I have an old version of XP...pre SP1 and SP2. Over the past 3+ years,
everytime I try and do Windows Update, the information updates, and then my
system crashes of freezes up until I remove the downloaded updates. My
question is, can I go purchase a new Window's XP home upgrade CD with SP2 and
use it to reload my xp home operating system to a newer more stable one, or
am I going to be forced to purchase a more expensive whole version of XP?
Can you use a window xp home upgrade cd to upgrade an older version of xp
home?

thanks,

Jon

Buying a new version of XP is unlikely to resolve your problem.

Provided that your version of XP is a genuine then you should be able
to upgrade to SP2 using a FREE CD available from Microsoft, but make
sure that you follow the checklist at
www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/sp2_whattoknow.mspx

The most likely reason your computer freezes etc is because your
device drivers or bios need updating or you have malware.

You do not need to purchase XP again, just slipstream (integrate) SP2 with
your CD copy.

Slipstreaming Windows XP Service Pack 2 and Create Bootable CD

You could also go a step further and integrate all the Hotfixes released
after SP2 with nLite.

When installing updates select the "custom" install option - it gives you
the opportunity to determine/review if the update(s) are of value - it
provides a method to determine exactly which update is problematic. You are
also given the option that the particular update is not to be "presented"
again for installation.

The new XP Home CDs include SP2 - it would be a good move to install XP with
SP2 (or "slipstream" as suggested, providing you have or can download SP2 -
a large file). XP Home with SP2 is considered an"upgrade" of XP Home pl;ain
vanilla - If you have Xp/SP2 installed and try to do a repair with ordinary
XP CD you will get a message that a newer version is installed and cannot
repair.
