XP having C:\WINNT and C:\Windows directories?

D

David Gonzales

Hello all,

After installing XP (clean installation), I only had the C:\Windows
Directory. Now, over time, I noticed that I have C:\WINNT directory
also. Is this bad? Should this be there? Why is it there? Is it
because of old applications wanting it to be there? Is it because of
Roaming profiles? With Roaming Profiles, the original profile was
created with NT and 2000. Thanks in advance...

Hi, David.

The default name for the WinXP boot folder is \Windows EXCEPT when WinXP is
installed as an upgrade from WinNT4 or Win2K, in which case it inherits the
\WinNT name.

I've never heard of either \Windows or \WinNT being created except by the
Setup process - or by the user, of course. Especially in the same volume
(C:). But, I know nothing about networks or servers - or roaming profiles.

What is in your \WinNT? A full GB or more of WinXP operating system files?
Or just a few placeholders, data files and utilities?

Unless you find something significant there, I suggest you try deleting
WinNT and see if WinXP will let you. Better yet, rename it (\OldNT ?) and
see if any program complains; if not, then delete it.

You dont know what youre missing with roaming profiles, hours of fun setting
it up, even longer waiting for it to logon to the domain

AFAIK all versions of NT use the folder Winnt
except for XP which uses the Windows folder

i noticed a similar thing...that after i had XP installed
a Winnt folder was created

on my machine the only thing that's in it is a driver for one of my devices
that did not have an XP driver...so i ended up using a win2000 driver (it
works fine, by the way)

so if you have a Winnt folder...i would just leave it alone
and not worry about it
