Hi,

Hi,

I was recently given a computer with Windows XP Pro on an Intel PIII 451MHz
computer with 128M RAM. XP is pretty slow so I would appreciate advice and
/or a recommended utility that can identify my motherboard and tell me what
the max speed CPU and amount of RAM my MB will support.

Thanks,

James

Given Pentium III processors are no longer made this could be irrelevant.
The machine sounds like a typical IBM spec. for 1999/2000. The motherboards
only took 3 x 128 MB PC100 SDRAM max so at most you could have only 384 MB.

If it is an IBM, then they have a wizard on their website that will identify
the motherboard.

I'll I can say is this......."MORE RAM!!!"..... for XP to run
semi-smoothly...is
to have at least 256MB......at a minimum......

Which will give a very substantial improvement on 128. I ran the Beta
of XP very happily on just such a machine; though not trying later
heavy graphics programs like Movie editing

I recommend AIDA 32. I used it on my Win98 machine to tell me
exactly what RAM specs I had installed and exactly what I could add
to that motherboard. (I ended up upgrading to a new machine, but
that's another story.:-)

Aida is no longer maintained, as I just discovered. Its author now
works for Lavalys, which has released Everest, a similar category
of product. The free download of Everest (which I have not yet
tried) is at

ON a pc that old I'd personally would't put any money into it.

Well, using a program like freshdiag www.freshdiagnose.com should give
you sort of an idea the max your board can handle.

Getting a new pc is probably the best solution, cause you wont be able
to find new cpu's for your motherboard, i suspect the max on that board
will be a 1Ghz coppermine CPu? Not even? If its a flip chip?

But ya, if you dont have a lot of money, you can always add at least
128MB of ram.

Disable services thats not needed.
Disable themes, set it for it performance level.
Disable system restore (will speed it up a little)

remember that the old fashioned way is to open it up and have a look,
google any numbers and letters you read on the mobo. I wouldn't
necessarily suggest it over the software though.
