I use IE and go to Tool/Windows Update, and it hangs. I also try and go
through "Help and Support" with the same result.

How can I make sure I have patches up to date without hanging?

Hi there,

If IE is working fine otherwise try these steps to troubleshoot Windows
update issue:

1. Click on the Start button.
2. Click on the Run item in the Start menu, Run box will appear.
3. Type in the Run box: services.msc and hit OK, Services Panel will appear.
4. Find the Cryptographic Services string and select and right-click on it.
5. Select the Properties option on the Services panel toolbar, the service
properties box will appear.
6. Set the Startup type to disabled, click on the Stop button and finish it
by the Apply button
7. Click Start, and then click Run.
8. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.

In the command prompt window, type the following commands and then press
enter after each command:

To enter command prompt, perform step-1:

1. Click Start, run, type "cmd" (with out quotation marks) and click OK.

In the dos window, type th below commands as it as and hit enter after each
command.

ren %systemroot%\system32\catroot2 oldcatroot2
Exit

Alternatively, try these steps to rename the catroot folder:

* Double-click My Computer.
* Double-click C drive.
* Double-click Windows file.
* Double-click System32 file.
* Right-click catroot2, click rename, type "catroot2old"
* Hit ENTER
* Restart your computer.

Thanks. Wow, how intuitive of Microsoft. No wonder there are so many
security problems. No one can figure out how to patch their machines.
