XP hangs on startup

XP Home SP1, Athlon with ASUS A7V8X-X.

Trying to clean up machine from virus/adware. Got it so it scanned clean
with Adaware & NAV but firewall wouldn't come up (files were missing,
probably turfed by cleanup). Did a XP in place upgrade (repair) install to
try and restore the missing files but now the system will not boot - freezes
during the logo phase.

Boots fine is safe mode - don't see any driver conflicts or anything that
would tell me why it freezes. Safe mode with networking freezes however -
nothing of use in the boot log file and the NIC driver looks OK.

Tried F8 and enabling the boot log but the file never contains any
information except what is put in during safe mode.

What am I supposed to do now? What other sort of diagnosis are you supposed
to be able to do in safe mode anyway?

Get error 00000006ba - RPC server in unavailable from the SFC.

The other ad-scans & NAV come away clean (I had removed all the virus/adware
before - that is why the PC is in this mess).

I think I will re-install unless I get another idea soon.
