Greetings,
Please explain to me how to disable "Windows XP-H
firewall".
Thank you, George Koger

Greetings --

To enable/disable the built-in firewall, Start > Network
Connections > Right-click the connection > Properties > Advanced >

HOW TO Enable or Disable Internet Connection Firewall in Windows XP

Before doing so, make sure that you're either disconnected from
the Internet, or have another firewall in place.

If you disable the XP Firewall, I hope you have another to replace it.

Greetings --

Isn't that pretty much what I already said?

Go to Control Panel->Network Connections, then right click
the connection you are using. On the left side of the
screen, click "Change Settings of This Connection". Click
"Advanced", then uncheck the box at the top.

hi bruce,

does it hurt anything to have the xp firewall on, if you have zone alarm?

thanks

hi again,

something told me to check to see if the built-in firewall was turned on. i
thought it was turned on by default.
apparently not, because the "protect my computer", option is not checked.

which of the options under the settings button should be checked?

thank you again.

No it doesn't. But the new Security Center has a notation that running
multiple firewalls isn't recommended. There isn't any noticeable loss of
throughput using two firewalls, so go ahead if you want to run more
than one. Windows Firewall is enhanced from the 1st version, but it's
still somewhat limited in scope to other 3rd party or hardware firewalls.

You'll find those with different points on view on this. Here's
mine: don't do it. You achieve no extra protection, you incur the
extra overhead of running two firewalls, and you run the risk
(probably small, but not zero) of conflicts between them.

Greetings --

WinXP's built-in ICF is _not_ designed to act as a compliment to
3rd party firewalls, and Microsoft actually recommends disabling it if
you use another software firewall, although a great many people have
reported no problems using ICF in conjunction with other products. My
position is that running two or more software firewalls simultaneously
is generally unnecessary and can _sometimes_ cause conflicts, possibly
negating the protection of both. In any event, having two firewalls
running simultaneously is most certainly an unnecessary drain on
system resources.

With impending availability of XP's improved firewall, this seems like a good
time to revisit the issue of simultaneously running both the software
firewall and a hardware firewall. I installed a Sonic Wall ISA and have
stayed away from also running a software firewall because this seemed
redundant/unnecessary, and because of increased processing overhead. Are
these still valid assumptions with the new improved XP firewall?

thank you r mccarty.

do people in the know, have multiple firewalls turned on?
