Open Security Center. If you have a third-party firewall installed (or
av software that comes with "Internet Worm Protection" like NAV), WF
will be disabled but the "button" will be green and say "On". Then when
you click the double-arrow button to the right it will show you what
firewall is running instead of WF.

If this isn't the case, post back with what firewall protection you do
have.

Copy and paste the following text below the ************** into notepad,
save from notepad as a *.reg file (such as fwoff.reg), double click the
*.reg file, answer Yes and Ok, then reboot. It should completely disble
the Windows firewall and notification of it at startup.

**************
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center]
"FirewallOverride"=dword:00000001
"FirewallDisableNotify"=dword:00000001

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsFirewall\StandardProfile]

"EnableFirewall"=dword:00000000

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\WindowsFirewall\DomainProfile]

"EnableFirewall"=dword:00000000

Thanks Steve,
did what you told me...

There was no notification at startup and the firewall ist still shown
as active in the security center.

But the it has been greyed-out in the firewall security settings

Any idea?

Might be a glitch in Security Center. Not sure. I'll have to look into
it further.

I have seen a few cases where the reg file needed to be merged again and
a couple of hard reboots for it to really take effect, and a few other
cases where that sucker just will not turn off no matter what you do.
Why, I don't know, except I do know that the SP2 firewall does its
damndest to be active at boot-time. The reg file I gave usually kills
the boot-time security FW settings, but not always. Don't know why. Was
just something to try. You can easily reverse it by deleteing the keys
it set in regedit if you so desire and persue it otherwise.

Are you using some other software firewall on the machine? If so perhaps
Security Center is telling you that _it_ is active.

Why do you want to turn off MS FW, if you have none in its place?

We don't know that he has no other FW in place or not, nor why he wants
it off. I know of several scenarios I deal with at work where such is
necessary, though.

The person said "well I've already deactivated NAV and ..."

So it seems unlikely, there is another one running!!

I suppose so, but until the OP responds to such questions we just won't
know for sure. I tried to address the OP question. You raised another,
and rightly so, might I add. Sorry I didn't ask about the need to
disable the Win FW in the 1st place, would have been more prudent of me
to do so, in retrospect.

Thanks Dix,

Thanks to all who responded!

It seems that I'm a little late with answering as there a slight
difference in time as I'm sitting in Europe.

I really just would like to have control over my machine and I simply
ant to stop the firewall, whatsoever the reason is, I just want to stop
it. There are many scenarios I could list here but for now I just want
to stop that bloody fu... firewall.

- The firewall ist definitely still active,checked with: netsh firewall
show config

- The reg file has been merged succesfully, I've checked the entries
made with regedt

- There is no other firewall running at all

- Yes there are about 4 different network connections but only 1 active
the others are disabled.

Many thanks for any hints

:) Dirk
