Nate

I'm having a problem accessing my XP Pro computer on the
network from my laptop running Win ME. 2 computers have XP Pro on them
and they can access each other just fine. I'm using a wireless
router and connect the 2 XP ones together with an Ethernet cable
(through the router). All 3 can access the Internet just fine and my
Win Me computer can access the files on 1 of the XP computers, but not
the other one. (We'll call that one XP_Old.) All 3 of them have the
same user accounts, the same workgroup name, and have plenty of shared
folders on them. Simple file sharing is turned OFF as well as all
software firewalls. When I use the laptop to access the XP_Old
computer, it gives me an error like "unable to access XP_Old" or
something to that effect. Does anyone know how to fix this problem? Thanks!

Nate,

On a WinXP Pro computer, if SFS is disabled, check the Local Security Policy
(Control Panel - Administrative Tools). Under Local Policies - Security
Options, look at "Network access: Sharing and security model", and ensure it's
set to "Classic - local users authenticate as themselves".

If you set the Local Security Policy to "Guest only", make sure that the Guest
account is enabled, and has an identical, non-blank, password on all computers.
If "Classic", setup and use a common account with identical, non-blank, password
on all computers.

Cheers,
Chuck
Paranoia comes from experience - and is not necessarily a bad thing.

Chuck,
It's set to Classic and I log onto my Win ME machine with a username
and password that are exactly the same as on the XP_Old computer.
Still, when I try to access that computer, it gives me the error: "
<XP_old> is not accessible. This request is not accepted by the
network. Try again later." Thanks for your help!

Happy Easter!

Hello Nate,

Thank you for posting here.

Based on my experience, you may try the following methods to resolve this
issue.

Suggestion One:
I suggest you install the NetBEUI protocol on all your computers in the
network to resolve this issue.

On the Windows XP machines please perform the following:

1. Insert your Windows XP CD into the CD-ROM drive and browse to the
Valueadd\MSFT\Net\NetBEUI folder.

2. Copy Nbf.sys to the %SYSTEMROOT%\System32\Drivers directory.

3. Copy Netnbf.inf to the %SYSTEMROOT%\Inf hidden directory.

4. Click Start, click "Control Panel", and then double-click "Network
Connections".

5. Right-click the adapter you want to add NetBEUI to, and then click
Properties.

6. On the General tab, click Install.

7. Click Protocol, and then click Add.

8. Click to select "NetBEUI Protocol" from the list and then click OK.

9. Restart your computer if you receive a prompt to complete the
installation.

On the Windows 98/me Machine, please perform:

1). Click Start, point to Settings and Click Control Panel.
2). Double click the Network icon and click the Configuration tab.
3). Click the Add button and click to select Protocol in the next windows
and click Add.
4). Select Microsoft in the left window and double click NetBEUI in the
right window.
5). Click OK to reboot your computer.

Suggestion Two:
Start the Computer Browser Service

a. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Manage.
b. In the console tree, expand "Services and Applications".
c. Click Services.
d. In the right details pane, verify that the Computer Browser service is
started, right-click Computer Browser, and then click Start.
e. Close the Computer Management window.

Suggestion Three:
Turn On NetBIOS over TCP/IP

a. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click "Network and Internet
Connections".
b. Click Network Connections.
c. Right-click Local Area Connection, and then click Properties.
d. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.

e. Click the General tab, and then click Advanced.
f. Click the WINS tab.
g. Under "NetBIOS setting", click "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP", and then
click OK two times.
h. Click Close to close the "Local Area Connection Properties" dialog box.
i. Close the Network Connections window.

Suggestion Four:
Please disable ICF in your Windows XP. To do so:

1). Click Start, and then click My Network Places.
2). Under Network Tasks, click View Network Connections.
3). Right-click the connection that you use for the Internet, and then
click Properties.
4). Click the Advanced tab.
5). Click to clear the "Protect my computer and network by limiting or
preventing access to this computer from the Internet" check box
