XP: Double-click doesn't launch Programs on Desktop or single click in Start Menu

Double-clicking an icon on the XP desktop does not cause the program
to launch (IE is the exception).

Nor can I get anything to launch via the start menu using the normal
one-click.

Clicking only causes the programs icon to appear in the start menu
(PIN list?)...

To launch programs I must right-click the program's icon and select
"Open".

Another anomaly: My firewall (ZoneAlarm) and my proxy (Proxomitron)
don't load automatically, either, but they d show up in the start menu
in that PIN List.

Any ideas?

Hi Giffer,

Click Start / Run / Type "regsvr32 /i shell32"

If this does not help, download the .lnk file association fix from here and
apply it:
