xp dos(command) problem NTVDM

I had a problem setting up my router so the instructions said to check my ip
address using the dos program on xp. So I type in ping 192.xxx.xx.xx and I
get an error message saying:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\command.com
the NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS:0006 IP:0017 OP:f0 37 05 19 02 Choose 'Close' to terminated the
application.

Whenever I type ping into the command prompt, a message box pops up and that
is what is inside as well as 2 buttons that say 'Close' and 'Ignore'. Some
other commands work though, such as ipconfig, but as for other commands, I
don't know.
I really need to fix this problem because without it, I won't be able to fix
my router set up which I really need. How do I fix it?

You have a virus, command.com is NOT a valid Windows XP file. Update your
antivirus and perform a full system scan. ALso visit TrendMicro online
scanner.

Trend Micro - Housecall (free)
http://housecall.trendmicro.com

Then you should scan your system for spyware with the following free products.

Adaware SE (free)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/support/download

Spybot - search and destroy (free)
http://www.safer-networking.org/en/download/index.html

just to clarify. I guess you mean his command.com isn't valid/got
corrupted/infected. It is a Win XP file though.

note, for a proper the windows xp command prompt people should use
cmd.exe, not command.com
